For the first time, Havering Council has created much-needed housing by converting a loft into a comfortable living space.

This initiative is part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to addressing the borough’s demand for social housing. By making better use of existing properties, the Council aims to unlock new housing opportunities through smart, efficient solutions.

The loft, once an underused area, has now been transformed into a modern and welcoming home, offering essential accommodation to a local resident.

Councillor Paul McGeary, Cabinet Member for Housing Property and councillor for the Harold Hill ward, said:

“We remain committed to delivering sustainable and affordable housing for our community. This project demonstrates how we can effectively repurpose space to meet that goal.

“The conversion has turned a difficult-to-let property into a more appealing and functional home for a Havering tenant.

“It supports our wider strategy to expand social housing in the borough through innovative and practical approaches.”

The Council’s planned works team is continuing to explore similar opportunities for future loft conversions and two-bedroom developments.

This follows last month’s planning submission for 18 temporary modular homes on the Waterloo and Queen Street site in Romford — another creative solution aimed at offering more suitable, stable accommodation for homeless families in Havering.
